HEALING AFTER ABORTION
You may have carried this for years without saying it out loud. Not to your husband. Not to your closest friend. Not to anyone at church.
Maybe you know how old your child would be now. Maybe there is a week every year that is hard and no one around you knows why. Maybe you have asked God to forgive you a hundred times and still cannot feel that He has.
You are not the only woman sitting in a Katy church on Sunday morning with this in her chest, and you no longer have to carry it alone.
What We Believe, Said Plainly
We are a Christian practice. We believe life begins at conception, and we are not going to tell you that what happened was nothing.
We also believe this: there is no sin that puts a person outside the reach of God’s mercy. And carrying shame for fifteen years is not the same thing as repentance. Guilt can be worked through; shame tries to destroy you from within.
You will not be argued with here, and you will not be asked to defend yourself. You already know what you think about what happened. You have been prosecuting the case against yourself for a long time.
What Women Bring Us
- Grief with nowhere to put it, because there was no funeral and no one to tell
- A date that comes around every year — the due date, the day it happened, Mother’s Day
- Feeling like a fraud in your own faith: leading the study, singing on Sunday, certain that if anyone knew, it would all be over
- Fear of losing the children you have now, or trouble bonding with a baby born later
- A later miscarriage or infertility that reopened all of it
- Distance in your marriage, or a secret your husband does not know about
- Believing you have already used up your one chance at being forgiven
Who This Page Is For
This page is for women who have already had an abortion. It does not matter if it was last year or thirty years ago. Time alone does not settle this, and a woman who has carried it for two decades is not too late to set it down.
If you are pregnant right now and trying to decide what to do, we are not the right office for that conversation. Our convictions mean we could not give you neutral counsel, and you deserve to know that before you are sitting in a room with someone. Call us anyway and we will point you towards someone local who can help you navigate this decision from a more neutral stance.
What the Work Actually Looks Like
There is no curriculum here and no set number of sessions to get through.
The first session is usually just telling it out loud, in order, to someone whose face fills with compassion and not judgment. For many women that alone is the first time it has left their body. From there the work is different depending on what you are carrying — grief that never got to be grief, trauma that needs processing, a marriage that has a locked room in it, or the long distance between what you believe about God’s forgiveness and what you can actually feel.
We are not going to rush you toward being fine, and we are not going to hand you a verse and call it done.
If You Were Not the One Who Decided
Some women were pressured — by a boyfriend, a parent, a situation with no visible way out. Some were far too young to have any real say in anything.
If that is closer to your story, what you are carrying may be trauma as much as grief, and it is treated differently. Tell us when you call and we will match you accordingly.
Who You Would See
Three of our counselors do this work. All three are fully licensed and independently practicing, and all three are EMDR trained.
Marisa Cockrell, MA, LPC — Owner. Grief is her focus. MA in Biblical Counseling from Dallas Theological Seminary, with narrative theory training under Dan Allender, whose work centers on shame and the stories we tell about ourselves. Ask for her if the heaviest part is the distance between you and God.
Taylor Garcia, MA, LPC — Leads our perinatal and postpartum work, so reproductive loss is her daily ground. MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Denver Seminary. Currently pursuing Perinatal Mental Health Certification through Postpartum Support International. Ask for her if this sits close to pregnancy, birth, or the children you have now.
Chelsea Rhoden, MA, LPC — Complex trauma and C-PTSD. Certified Clinical Trauma Professional. Ask for her if you were coerced, if you were very young, or if this is tangled up with something else that was done to you.
If you are not sure who to ask for, tell us what is going on when you reach out and we will help you choose.
What You Tell Us Stays Here
We are not connected to your church, and your counselor is bound by law and by license to keep what you say confidential — within the narrow legal exceptions they will go over with you before your first session.
One practical note, because it matters more on this page than most: we are private pay, and we provide superbills you can submit to your insurance for possible out-of-network reimbursement. If you file one, your insurer receives a diagnosis code. If that is a concern for you, say so on the first call and we will talk it through before you decide anything.
Starting
Start with a free 15-minute phone consultation. You do not have to tell the whole story on that call — you can say almost nothing and still find out whether this feels possible.
Sessions are $135–$185 with a licensed counselor, depending on who you see. Book online or call (832) 278-2549.
