Here Comes The Sun Counseling

CHRISTIAN COUNSELING IN KATY, TX

We are professional counselors who offer a Christian perspective.

This approach is purposeful. We are passionate about and informed by our own faith. We are also licensed by the State of Texas and practice by the same clinical and ethical standards as any other licensed therapist. Faith becomes part of the conversation when you bring it into the room, and not before.

What It Actually Looks Like

We use the same evidence-based methods any good therapist uses — EMDR for trauma, Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Restoration Therapy.

What is different is that we are also people of faith, trained at Christian seminaries and universities.

Some clients want Scripture and prayer to be an explicit part of the hour. Some want a counselor who quietly shares their faith but would rather spend the time on their marriage. Some want none of it. All three are welcome here, and you get to decide which one you are — including changing your mind partway through.

Who Comes to Us

  • People who have been told to “just pray about it” and know that was not enough.
  • People who worry that a secular therapist will treat their faith as the problem, and that a pastor will treat their depression as a spiritual failure.
  • Couples who want their marriage understood inside their convictions rather than around them.
  • People carrying something they have never said out loud in church — an affair, an addiction, a doubt, an anger at God they were taught not to have.
  • People wrestling with sexual or gender identity who want to think it through with someone who takes both their faith and their experience seriously.
  • People who are not religious at all, who came because of a specialty we offer and stayed because the work was good.

You are welcome exactly as you are.

Women who have carried shame over a past abortion for years without saying it out loud. That work has its own page: Healing After Abortion.

How We Work

We ask, rather than assume. In a first session we will ask what role you want faith to play, and we will take the answer at face value.

We do not treat prayer as a substitute for treatment. If you are having panic attacks, you need help with panic attacks. Faith can be a real source of strength in that work, and it is not a replacement for the work.

We do not tell you what to believe. Your convictions are yours. Our job is to help you see clearly and move, not to hand you conclusions.

We keep the two things distinct. This is licensed clinical counseling. It is not pastoral care, discipleship, or church discipline, and we will say so plainly if what you need is one of those instead.

Where We Trained

All six of our counselors hold graduate degrees from Christian institutions.

Four earned their master’s degrees at Dallas Theological Seminary — Marisa Cockrell in Biblical Counseling, Chelsea Rhoden in Biblical Counseling, Nathan Blattman and Abigail Fontenot in Counseling. Taylor Garcia earned hers at Denver Seminary, and Melissa Reneau at Liberty University.

That is not a marketing line. It means the person across from you has actually studied theology and clinical practice side by side, and does not have to choose between them when you bring both into the room.

Beginning in September 2026 we also host two counseling practicum students from Dallas Theological Seminary, supervised by Marisa Cockrell, MA, LPC. They are not yet licensed, and sessions with them are $65.

What to Expect

Your counselor’s first work is to build a relationship of trust — to really see you and understand you.

From there we build your treatment plan around who you are, what you value, and the goals you want to reach.

We work at your pace, navigating your story together and discovering the common themes of pain in your life.

We will offer helpful strategies and techniques along the way. We will also work to reach the deeper layers of why we cope the way we do, so the hidden wounds in our hearts can heal rather than simply be managed.

When you want it, we welcome Jesus into all of this work, inviting Him to guide the work and the healing.

Getting Started

Start with a free 15-minute phone call. Tell us what is going on. If we are a fit, we will match you with the counselor whose work fits your situation — and if we are not, we will say so and point you somewhere better.

Sessions are $135 to $185, depending on the counselor. We are private pay and do not contract with insurance. We provide superbills you can submit to your plan; whether anything comes back depends on your policy.

We see clients in person at 908 Avenue B, Suite 200 in Katy, and online across Texas. We serve Katy, Cinco Ranch, Fulshear, Richmond, Brookshire, Cypress, and west Houston.

Who You Would Work With

Marisa Cockrell, MA, LPC, founder of Here Comes The Sun Counseling in Katy, Texas

Owner of the practice, and the counselor to ask for if faith is at the center of what you are bringing. Her Master of Arts is in Biblical Counseling from Dallas Theological Seminary. She works with faith and sexuality, and with grief, and has trained extensively under Dr. Mark Yarhouse in navigating sexual and gender identity for people of faith. She also supervises our counseling students.

Chelsea Rhoden, MA, LPC, counselor at Here Comes The Sun Counseling in Katy, Texas

Master of Arts in Biblical Counseling, Dallas Theological Seminary. Chelsea works with complex trauma and C-PTSD — the kind that started early and shaped how you see yourself. She is a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional and EMDR trained. For people whose faith and whose trauma are tangled together, she is unusually good at holding both.

Taylor Garcia, MA, LPC, perinatal and postpartum therapist at Here Comes The Sun Counseling in Katy, Texas

Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Denver Seminary. Taylor works with perinatal and postpartum mental health — pregnancy, birth, loss, infertility, and the first year of parenthood. These are seasons where faith often gets tested hardest and talked about least.

Nathan Blattman, counselor at Here Comes The Sun Counseling in Katy, Texas

Master of Arts in Counseling, Dallas Theological Seminary. Nathan works with men — anger, anxiety, depression, and addiction — and is the only man on our team. For men who have only ever discussed their faith with other men in a church setting, and never their struggles, he is a straightforward place to start.

Abigail Fontenot, MA, LPC Associate, counselor at Here Comes The Sun Counseling in Katy, Texas

Master of Arts in Counseling, Dallas Theological Seminary, and a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics from Ouachita Baptist University. Abigail works with disordered eating and body image, and she is the only counselor here who sees children as young as nine. She uses Acceptance and Commitment Therapy alongside a person-centered approach.

Melissa Reneau, MA, LPC-Associate, counselor at Here Comes The Sun Counseling in Katy, Texas

Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Liberty University. Melissa works with couples and with betrayal trauma — the aftermath of an affair, hidden addiction, or a discovery that changed what you thought was true. She is a Certified Partner Trauma Therapist and EMDR trained.

If you are not sure who to ask for, tell us what is going on when you reach out and we will help you choose.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT CHRISTIAN COUNSELING

Real therapy. Every counselor here is licensed by the State of Texas and uses established clinical methods. Scripture and prayer are available if you want them, and they never replace treatment.

No. A number of our clients are not religious. They came for a specialty we offer, and faith simply never enters the room. You will not be preached at.

If you want us to, yes. If you would rather we did not, we will not, and you never have to explain why.

Your pastor offers spiritual care and knows your community. We offer licensed clinical treatment for things like trauma, depression, anxiety, and addiction, and we are bound by confidentiality law. The two are not in competition, and many of our clients have both. Every one of us trained at a Christian seminary or university, but we leave the interpretation of Scripture to your pastor and do the clinical work of helping you find and break the destructive cycles you are caught in.

That fear is common, and it usually comes from one of two places: being told your suffering means your faith is not strong enough, or being told your belief in God is the root of the problem. We will do neither. This is a safe place to say what is actually going on, and you will not be judged for it. We believe God cares about what you are carrying, and that He never intended you to carry it alone.

That comes up often in couples work and it is workable. We will not take sides on belief. We will help you both be heard and help you decide how you want to handle it as a couple.

Yes. Those are some of the most honest conversations that happen in this office, and saying them out loud is often where the healing starts. We welcome your doubt and your anger, and we believe God does too. Nothing you say here goes back to your church.

Yes. Marisa Cockrell has trained extensively under Dr. Mark Yarhouse in navigating sexual and gender identity for people of faith. The goal is to help you think it through carefully, not to hand you a conclusion.
