Who I Work With

I believe that everyone has a unique, intricate and beautiful story that is waiting to be told. There are times when we just need a safe place that provides opportunities to understand the complexities and experiences within our lives. Counseling can be that place!

I enjoy working with people across the lifespan including early adolescence, starting around age 9, teens, adults and couples. My heart is with those suffering from the effects of traumatic experiences, struggling in relationships, dealing with disordered eating, depression, addiction, and those navigating sexual issues.

Each one of us longs for wholeness, to be known and to find peace.

A lot of what I see does not have a name yet when someone first sits down in the counseling room. It is a knot rather than a diagnosis, something that happened years ago and has never been said out loud, or a relationship that keeps going the same way, or a set of rules about food and the body that has quietly taken over more of a life than anyone realizes. I am not in a hurry to give it a label. I would rather we look at it together first, honestly, and see what it actually is.

Life contains an array of experiences which shape who we are. It can be overwhelming to make connections and find healthy rhythms for ourselves. If you are seeking healing for yourself through counseling, that is a brave first step! Healing can happen when we take time to understand our stories and let someone else bear witness to it. I consider it an honor to sit with people as they learn to fully pay attention to themselves and honor their lives.

How I Work

I employ counseling techniques from person-centered therapy, existential therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and Restoration Therapy. I believe that the counseling relationship is essential to the therapeutic process. Walking alongside clients through their pain and questioning is a privilege for me.

I view my role to be partnering with clients on their healing journey and finding ways to encourage and facilitate personal growth. Allowing someone to weed through the brokenness with you is a commendable thing that is not to be taken lightly. Holding hope is what I love to do for clients who are seeking to hold hope for themselves.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Not at all. A lot of what I see does not have a name yet when someone first sits down. It is a knot rather than a diagnosis. You do not need to arrive with it organized, and I am not in a hurry to give it a label. I would rather we look at it together first, honestly, and see what it actually is.

No, and most people I see with these concerns do not have one. Chronic dieting, food rules that keep multiplying, exercise you cannot skip without anxiety, and a running commentary about your body all cost something real, whether or not they meet diagnostic criteria.

From about age nine. Younger clients are not small adults and I do not treat them like it, but I also do not talk down to them. In my experience a nine-year-old can tell within about five minutes whether an adult is being authentic with them.

ACT is about changing your relationship to difficult thoughts and feelings rather than fighting to get rid of them, and then taking action in line with what actually matters to you. It is practical, and it tends to be a relief for people who have spent years trying to think their way out of something.
